BRIEF NOTE REGARDING THE FLOODS OF RIO GRANDE DEL SUR

Considering the current situation in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Caçapava, Caminhos e Cânions do Sul and Quarta Colônia, with the best intentions of solidarity, GeoLAC has contacted the three territories requesting a brief diagnosis of the situation in terms of the problems and needs, in order to seek support mechanisms.

In this sense the territories had manifest the following:

Caçapava UNESCO Global Geopark

Caçapava, unlike the other territories, is located far from the large rivers... so we have had some problems with the Irapuá stream, in the south of the territory, which has exceeded the level of the bridge, but nothing serious.

We consider that the situation In Quarta Colônia and Cânions it is much more critical, due to the great decline of its hills/plains and the greater presence of long rivers.

Caçapava is safe and calm. Risk study groups monitor the urban area closely and supporting the small issues and the ones who were evicted.

The Caçapava artisan collective is organizing a live event with more than 20 different products/geoproducts to raise funds for families displaced by the rise of some rivers.

But everything is quiet so far, only material damage. We appreciate the solidarity and concern of the UNESCO Global Geoparks family.

Caminhos e Cânions do Sul UNESCO Global Geopark

We appreciate all the messages of solidarity we have received from friends of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.
We inform you that the municipalities in the UNESCO Global Geopark Caminhos dos Cânions do Sul are not located in the regions most affected by flooding in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. In our territory, there was only temporary blocking of some highways due to the large volume of rain, difficulty in accessing certain locations and people temporarily homeless in some municipalities, but who received assistance and have now returned to their homes.

However, the situation in most regions of Rio Grande do Sul is tragic. We are facing the greatest climate catastrophe in the state's history. Persistent and extraordinary rainfall caused rivers to reach historic levels, flooding many cities.

Some data released this Sunday, 05/05/2024, which reveal the scale of the catastrophe:

• 340 municipalities affected, out of a total of 497 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul
• 18,487 people in shelters
• 115,844 people displaced
• 844,673 people affected
• 175 people injured
• 105 people missing
• 78 deaths

The need for help in Rio Grande do Sul is urgent! Many volunteers in all municipalities in our Geopark are promoting campaigns and engaging in actions to collect donations such as non-perishable food, bedding, blankets, mattresses and water for the regions that need it most.

For those who want to collaborate and cannot be present at these actions, we recommend the official accounts of the State Government. It is also possible to make international donations.

Quarta Colônia UNESCO Global Geopark

Approximately 47% of the state's municipalities (235 of the 497 municipalities) have already been affected, with more than 700,000 people affected as of yesterday, of which 80,573 are homeless. Across the state, there have been 75 deaths and more than 100 people missing.

The municipalities that make up the Quarta Colônia Geopark represent one of the epicenters of this catastrophe. Since the end of April, Quarta Colônia has suffered from intense rains, floods and landslides. In some cases, an accumulation of more than 200mm of rain was recorded in 24 hours. In the municipality of Nova Palma alone, between 26/4 and 04/5, more than 600mm of rain were recorded, with a historical average of 180mm per month. A climate and humanitarian tragedy that results in residents displaced from their homes and families and communities isolated from municipal centers due to high water levels and damage suffered by interior roads.

We believe that between 10 and 20% of the Geopark population were directly affected.

In Faxinal do Soturno alone, a municipality with less than 7,000 inhabitants, 170 people have been displaced and approximately 160 km of rural roads have been damaged. In Restinga Sêca, more than 210 people are estimated to be homeless. While São João do Polêsine estimates around 120 homeless people.

Material damage makes communication difficult, via the internet and telephone lines, and makes it impossible to travel between municipalities, as there are at least 11 total
road blocks and 3 partial road blocks. Most movements within the territory for rescue operations are only possible by air, which has been made easier in the last 24 hours due to improved weather conditions. Many places are without electricity or loss of internet, a situation made worse by blocked roads and damaged bridges. Access to information, inside and outside our territory, has been challenging.

In view of these uncertainties, the Quarta Colônia UNESCO Global Geopark has been working to collect as much data as possible and centralize it in a single communication channel for the entire region, seeking to facilitate access to information.

Despite all theobstacles, we hope, in the coming days, to maintain a more constant update on the situation of bridges, roads and the number of displaced people in the territory.

We were living in a time of increasing development, work and international visibility.

Today, we face the biggest climate crisis in our history. This is a moment of solidarity, of rescue and support for the victims, of action to rebuild our land.

We will publish new updates throughout the days in our social networks. We seek concrete information so that we can request national and international support. As local media outlets were affected, we have no news from several locations. Any information is welcome. Let's get through this. It's time to work together to help those who need it most and to rebuild our beloved land.

Each one of our communities have solidary pix account for donations for the ones who want to support:

We ask to everyone who can support in any way to do it, to share knowledge, care, assistance and solidarity.
